Borderlands 2’s base game ships with 50 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore on Xbox and 51 trophies including the Platinum on PlayStation, and a focused solo run to 100% takes roughly 60–80 hours on a single character. Only a small group of them are genuinely missable — the ones tied to rare enemy spawns, a randomly placed Sanctuary NPC, and named locations that exist only inside one-time story areas — so the safest plan is one completion character who does every side mission and clears every map as they go. Everything else, including the long grind behind “Challenge Accepted,” can be mopped up afterward in True Vault Hunter Mode.
The base game list at a glance
The 50 base achievements break into six groups with very different time costs. The counts below are the base-game list as tracked in the in-game challenge and mission menus; the DLC lists sit on top of these and are counted separately.
| Group | What it covers | Count | Realistic time | Missable risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story and boss milestones | Main mission completions, opening the Vault, defeating Handsome Jack | 12 | 20–25 h | None |
| Side missions, NPCs and vendors | All side quests, Michael Mamaril’s gun, tipping Moxxi, Eridium Black Market purchases | 9 | 8–12 h | Low to moderate |
| Exploration | Discovering every named location in each region, plus the global “World Traveler” | 5 | 4–6 h | High |
| Class skill kills | One per playable class — Sabre turret, Phaselock, Gunzerk, Decepti0n, Deathtrap | 5 | 2–4 h each | None |
| Combat oddities | Goliath leveling, Donkey Mong, rare Chubby spawns, thrown Tediore kills, Constructor kills, Badass tokens, customization unlocks | 18 | 6–10 h | Moderate |
| The grind | “Challenge Accepted” — complete level 1 of every non-level-specific challenge on one character | 1 | 15–25 h | None, but it is the long pole |
Achievements that can actually slip past you
Most of the list is unmissable because it is tied to the main story. The ones below are the exception, and they are the reason a completion run should be planned rather than improvised.
| Achievement / trophy | Trigger | Where | Why it gets missed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tribute To A Vault Hunter | Pick up the weapon dropped by Michael Mamaril | Sanctuary — four possible spawn spots | His appearance is random, so players finish the game without ever seeing him |
| Definitely An Italian Plumber | Kill Donkey Mong | Eridium Blight | Rare spawn; players clear the region once and move on |
| Cute Loot | Kill a rare oversized enemy variant (Chubby / Loot Midget) | Any bandit-heavy map with chests | Pure chance; it cannot be forced by clearing a map |
| Exploration set (Arctic / Urban / Highlands / Blight Explorer and World Traveler) | Discover every named location in each region | All regions | Several locations exist only inside one-time story sequences, so the fog has to be cleared before the mission ends |
| Did It All | Complete every side mission on one character | All regions | A handful of side quests only appear during narrow windows in the story |
The practical rule: after every story mission, walk the whole map before you fast-travel out, and check Sanctuary for Mamaril on the same trip.
Which character to run your completion on
Class skill achievements are per-class, so a full 50 requires starting all five characters — but each one only needs to reach the level where the skill unlocks, which is a couple of hours, not a full playthrough. The decision below is about the one character you take to 100%.
| Your situation | Pick | Why it suits the list | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo, first completion run, want the least effort | Axton (Commando) | The Sabre turret earns its own class achievement passively and draws fire while you explore | Lower raw damage than a Gunzerker at the same level |
| Solo, want the fastest kill speed for the grind | Salvador (Gunzerker) | Gunzerking doubles your output, and the 90-second Gunzerk requirement falls out of normal play | Gear-dependent; weak early |
| Regular co-op group | Maya (Siren) | Phaselock doubles as crowd control, and revives are common in a group anyway | Slower solo boss kills |
| You want the challenge achievements to feel deliberate | Zer0 (Assassin) | Decepti0n rewards patient, aimed play that suits long-range sniper challenges | Squishiest of the five while learning |
| You prefer pets and passive clearing | Gaige (Mechromancer) | Deathtrap clears mobs while you focus on map discovery | Anarchy stacks punish dying |
A practical completion route, in order
A completion route is simply the order that lets each achievement’s prerequisite already be true when you go for it. Following the wrong order does not lock you out of the Platinum, but it can add twenty hours of backtracking.
- Commit to one character for the whole run. Challenge progress, Badass Rank tokens and most hidden counters are tracked per character, so switching mid-run resets “Challenge Accepted” from zero. Reason: this single decision saves more time than any other.
- Take every side mission the moment it appears. “Did It All” only awards on the character who completes the full set, and a few quests are only offered during short story windows. Reason: a missed quest means a fresh playthrough of that region.
- Reveal the entire map before you leave each area. Fast travel makes it tempting to skip the corners, but the Explorer achievements and “World Traveler” need every named location, and some sit inside sequences you cannot replay. Reason: fog-of-war is the cheapest thing to clear while you are already
